Corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of titanium nitride plating on orthodontic wires

Abstract: Titanium nitride (TiN) coating by ion plating has properties such as high hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and surface lubricity, therefore TiN coating is often used in various dental appliances and materials. In this study, we evaluated the corrosion behaviors and mechanical properties of TiN coated stainless steel (SS) and nickel titanium (Ni-Ti) orthodontic wires prepared by ion plating. TiN coating by ion plating improves the corrosion resistance of orthodontic wires. The corrosion pitting … Show more

“…Biomechanical environments and effects of friction were found to be important for various dental treatments, especially for orthodontic treatments [443]. Titanium nitride plating was developed to improve the corrosion resistance of orthodontic wires [444], while biomechanical variables and coatings were examined to control friction [445−449]. It is also interesting to note a number of similarities of the research between joint tribology and oral tribology.…”

“…The tensile test was performed, using the universal testing machine (Zwick Roell, Z020, Germany) with a load cell. The span of the wire placed between the grips was set at 20 mm [ 18 ]. SS wires were stretched until they snapped.…”

“…Bending force during loading was determined from the force-deflection diagram by recording the force readings that were taken at deflections of 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 mm. The test was carried out at 37 ± 1°C temperature [ 18 ].…”

“… 1 , 2 SS has been used as ureteral stents, orthopedic devices, orthodontic brackets, and wires because of its superior mechanical properties. 3 , 4 Although SS provides excellent biomechanical properties compared to other alloys, the reduced corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of SS restrict its clinical application. The physiological environment is a complicated electrochemical system, and the in vitro or in vivo biological response to Ni–Ti and SS alloys correlates to elemental release, which is the result of corrosion.…”
