Mild steel is widely used in the engineering field because of its low carbon content that is often ductile and machinable. However, mild steel despite its hardness properties when exposed to corrosion mediums easily corrodes. This study investigates the effect of mild steel quenching after different heat treatment procedures and later exposed to corrosion environment (sodium chloride solution) to observe the corrosion behaviour of the metal. The mild steel samples were cut into dimensions of 75 mm x 25 mm x 4.5 mm and heat treated at temperatures of 100 ° C, 300 ° C, and 500 ° C, and quenched in both water and oil mediums. The temperature applied to the mild steel is expected to produce a phase structure in the pearlite region, and thereby improving its properties. The quenching medium influenced the microstructure of the mild steel, the hardness values as well as the corrosion resistant capabilities of the metal. The mechanical properties were tested using ultimate testing machine and Rockwell hardness Tester. Data obtained from this research, shows that the samples heat treated, water, and oil quenched all showed improved properties. It was observed that the percentage elongation for oil quenched at 100 °C, 300 °C, and 500 °C is 18.5 %, 14.1 %, and 12.4 % which is higher than water quenched which recorded 16.7 %, 12.3 %, and 9.8 % but the reverse was the results obtained for the other mechanical properties. The optical microscopy was used to observe surface morphology when the surface is exposed to the corrosion medium. It was observed that the oil quenched samples experience the lowest weight loss when compared to water quenched samples, and the as received sample had the highest weight loss. This shows that heat treatment and quenching provides some form of protection for the mild steel samples.

Stainless steel is a kind of metal alloy that is widely used in industrial equipment. The problem faced by all metals that come into contact with corrosive medium is corrosion. Corrosion or metal deterioration can not be avoided since it is a spontaneous reaction between the metal with its environment. One method to control the corrosion of metal alloy is by adding the inhibitor into the medium. The addition of inhibitors in synergy is discussed. The addition of a phosphate inhibitor as a film-forming role on the metal surface is assisted by the addition of carbohydrazide components in controlling dissolved oxygen levels in seawater. The addition of inhibitors in synergy is expected to increase the efficiency of the inhibitor's performance in a single work. This research aims to determine the best composition for phosphate and carbohydrazide inhibitors due to the effect of synergy in controlling the corrosion rate of metal alloys in seawater. The synthetic seawater medium was the 3.5% NaCl dilution prepared by diluting the NaCl crystal into the demineralized water. The phosphate inhibitor was added into the medium with various compositions (100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 ppm). Then, the carbohydrazide was added into the medium with the multiple compositions 5, 7.5, 10 and 15. The corrosion rate measurement was done by using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy Instrument. The Stainless steel sample was prepared by cutting the stainless steel plate with a size 1cm x 1 cm and a thickness of around 2-3 mm. The measurement process was done by putting the specimen in the working electrode and dipping into the medium with and without the inhibitors. The results show that the addition of inhibitor effectively decreases the corrosion rate. The best result is obtained when the ratio between phosphate and carbohydrazide is 100:10 ppm, which reduces the corrosion rate from 0.40128 mpy to 0.008 mpy

Steel is extensively used in many applications that include construction because of its unique properties and the ease with which its properties can be enhancedfor improved performance. Due to its high malleability and strength, it can be easily machined and welded compared to other types of steel. However, the susceptibility to low performance has been associated with its low resistance to environmental degradation when exposed to corrosive or polluted environments. This study focuses on mild steel heat treatment quenched in four mediums of engine oil, water, palm oil, and air, along with its properties and corrosion susceptibility. The high temperature used for the procedure is 800 °C, 900 °C, and 1000 °C, respectively. After the heat treatment procedure, the test samples undergo corrosion testing in the sodium chloride solution for two weeks to observe the presence of corrosion products rust on its surface. The tensile machine was utilized to obtain the mechanical properties, including yield strength, tensile strength, and percentage elongation. The hardness values were obtained using the Rockwell hardness machine, and the optical microscope (OM) was used to observe the effect of the corrosion activity on the sample surface. The results obtained indicate an increase in the hardness, yield, and tensile strength, but the elongation reduces as the temperature increases.
