Corrosion of API XL 52 steel in presence of Clostridium celerecrescens

Abstract: During the characterization of sediments formed in pipelines transporting hydrocarbons, the knowledge of the microbiological diversity becomes very interesting, especially when it is related to microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC). The presence of microorganisms is considered as one of the factors that affect the corrosion processes occurring at the pipeline; therefore, their corrosiveness must be determined. In this way, the identification of new species affecting the MIC processes is still considered… Show more

“…Clostridia of the genus Clostridium were best represented in this enrichment’s metagenome after four transfers (36%, Supplementary Figure S5 ) and persisted in the enrichments after 11 transfers. Clostridium includes several species of CO 2 -reducing acetogens that use H 2 as an electron donor ( Bengelsdorf et al, 2018 ) but also electrodes ( Nevin et al, 2011 ) and Fe 0 ( Monroy et al, 2011 ). Besides, Clostridium was previously enriched on Fe 0 from environments such as scraped bicycles thrown in a Dutch channel ( Philips et al, 2019 ), rice paddies ( Kato et al, 2015 ), or oilfield production waters ( Ma et al, 2019 ).…”

“…Members of Clostridium genus were also identi ed in our analyses. They have been reported in environmental corrosive bio lms by other studies as well [21,39]. Monroy and colleagues [39] detected lower corrosion rates for Clostridium celerecrescens than that corrosion rate for SRB.…”

“…7a) and the best coverage of the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway for autotrophic acetogenesis (Fig.7, Table 1). Clostridium includes several species of autotrophs that use H 2 as electron donor (Bengelsdorf et al, 2018) but also electrodes (Nevin et al, 2011) and Fe 0 (Monroy et al, 2011).
