This study proposes a new pretreatment method that uses alkoxide precursors with a plasticizing agent; the purpose of this study is to improve the electrochemical and mechanical properties of a galvanized steel surface. Galvanized steel was covered with a hybrid film obtained from a sol that consisted of two alkoxide precursors, 3 -(trimethoxysilylpropyl) methacrylate (TMSM) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), with nitrate cerium in a concentration of 0.01 M and a polyethylene glycol (PEG) plasticizer. The hybrid coatings were obtained by dip-coating method with various concentrations of plasticizer (0, 20, 40 and 60 g.L -1 ). The hybrid films were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), profilometry, contact angle measurements, a tribometer with the type-setting ball on the plate and electrochemical tests. The addition of the plasticizer into the hybrid films improves the corrosion resistance behavior compared to the sample without the plasticizer. The addition of 20 g.L -1 of plasticizer showed the best performance in the electrochemical tests. The mechanical behavior results indicated that higher PEG concentrations resulted in films with enhanced durability.

ResumoFilmes híbridos estão sendo utilizados como revestimentos de substratos metálicos para proteção contra corrosão. Este trabalho tem como objetivo verificar o comportamento corrosivo de filmes híbridos com diferentes concentrações de polietilenoglicol (PEG) sobre folhas de flandres pela técnica de varredura por eletrodo vibratório (SVET). Os resultados demonstraram que o aumento da concentração de polietilenoglicol ocasionou a formação de fissuras e delaminação do filme híbrido. As análises por SVET demonstraram a possibilidade de analisar a corrosão localizada em regiões com defeitos no filme e no substrato metálico. Palavras-chave: Filmes híbridos; Corrosão; SVET. CORROSION CHARACTERIZATION OF HYBRID FILMS BY SVET AbstractHybrid films have been used as coatings for metallic substrate for corrosion protection. The present work aims to verify the behavior of hybrid coatings with different concentrations of polyethylenoglycol on tinplate for corrosion technique of vibrating electrode (SVET). The results showed that increasing of the polyethylenoglycol concentration caused the formation of cracks and delamination of the hybrid film. The analysis by SVET demonstrated the possibility of analyzing the localized corrosion in zones with defects in film and metallic substrate.

Mechanical Properties and Corrosion Resistance of SA508-4 Low Carbon Alloy Steel

The mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of SA508-4Ni-Cr-Mo low carbon alloy steel are elucidated using tensile testing, Charpy impact testing, fracture surface analysis and in-situ electrochemical noise (EN) technique. The metallographic structures are characterized by metallographic microscope combining with transmission electron microscope (TEM), and the fracture morphology is characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The intercritical heat treatment (IHT) is introduced to heat the SA508-4 steel. The experimental observations reveal that the metallographic structure of SA508-4 steel is fine and uniform after different heat treatment, with martensite and lower bainite structures. The strength and toughness of SA508-4Ni-Cr-Mo are confirmed higher than that of SA508-3Mn-Ni-Mo steel used for reactor pressure vessels (RPV) at present. The IHT decreases the yield strength and toughness. EN results show that the noise resistance of SA508-4 steel decreased with the elevated temperature from 27 to 250°C, illustrating the passivity degradation of SA508-4 induced by the elevated temperature.
