Corrosion Behavior of the CoNiCrAlY-Al2O3 Composite Coating Based on Core-Shell Structured Powder Design

Abstract: The oxidation of the metal powder during the thermal spraying process usually leads to significant deterioration of the microstructure and performance of the coating. In order to isolate the metal powder from oxygen during the spraying process, the CoNiCrAlY-Al2O3 core-shell structured powder with Al2O3 as the shell was designed in this study. The influence of the core-shell structured powder on the microstructure and corrosion resistance of the HVOF coating has been studied in detail. The results show that th… Show more

“…For Co-NiCrAlY-Al2O3 coating powder, it can be observed from the figure that the higher peaks for -Co-Ni-Cr phase with smaller peaks for -Al2O3 phase and -Co, Ni, Cr, Al phase are detected. This is in line with the findings that have been documented in the relevant research [11].…”

“…It can be observed quite evidently that the basic composition of the sand particle is silica (SiO2) and very finely shaped and sized alumina particles. [11]. “…The problems occur due to direct contact of the metallic powder with the oxygen during the particle flight time. To avoid oxidation during particle flight W. Guo et al, manufactured a mechanically alloyed CoNiCrAlY powder [15]. The shell of alumina, approximately 1 µm was formed on CoNiCrAlY by ball milling.…”

“…The coatings produced by core-shell structure powder exhibit low oxide formation in the thermal spraying process. The low oxide content during HVOF process assists the formation of a dense alumina layer during thermal cycling and has good corrosion resistance [15]. The partial drawback of the core-shell powder coating is the poor deformability of the powder while hitting the target material which causes excessive porosity and some hard Al-Ni phases in the final coating.…”
