“…They found that the load magnitude wasn't the dominant factor for the friction coefficient, and the wear loss of the coating was greatly affected by the friction time. In addition, Singh [15], Cho [16], Mishra [17] and other scholars also conducted more thorough researches to the Cr 2 O 3 -based coating, and further revealed the failure mechanisms of the coatings under different experimental conditions. However, previous studies of mechanical properties on the Cr 2 O 3 -based ceramic coating were numerously focused on a single chemical composition (namely Cr 2 O 3 and TiO 2 at a specific percentage), and without attracting attention on the changes of mechanical properties caused by changing the second phase content.…”

“…From the corrosion kinetics curve of specimen A, conclusion can be drawn that severe oxidation occurs during the testing process. Worse still, the corrosion products spall easily due to the stress originated from the growth of the scales [35].…”

“…Chromium oxide (Cr 2 O 3 , 2265 °C) and aluminum oxide (α-Al 2 O 3 ), which have the same corundum structure with the space group R 3̅ c consisting of a hexagonal close packed array, are highly stable sesquioxides having an isostructural crystal . Besides Cr 3+ and Al 3+ having closer ion radii, they can be mixed at the atomic level and form complete substitutional solid solutions ((Al 2 O 3 ) x (Cr 2 O 3 ) 1– x in the entire range from x = 0 to x = 1) over the entire composition range without formation of any eutectic at high temperature; these solutions have superior mechanical properties, thermal shock resistances, and corrosion resistances. …”
