Corrosion Behavior of Keyhole-Free Friction Stir Spot Welded Joints of Dissimilar 6082 Aluminum Alloy and DP600 Galvanized Steel in 3.5% NaCl Solution

Abstract: Abstract:The corrosion behavior of keyhole-free friction stir spot welded joints of dissimilar 6082 aluminum alloy and DP600 galvanized steel in 3.5% NaCl solution has been investigated by the immersion test and electrochemical analysis. The surface of the aluminum alloy produced exfoliation and pitting corrosion. The pitting occurred seriously on the interface of the 6082 aluminum alloy, but the steel had no corrosion. The corrosion galvanic couples were formed between elements of Si and Fe with a high electr… Show more

“…These mechanical factors include applied stress, stress concentration factors, residual stress, strain rate, vibrations, and cyclic loading [ 28 , 29 ]. The presence of stress concentration factors and residual stress can further promote the propagation of stress corrosion cracks by deteriorating the local mechanical properties of materials [ 30 ]. In addition to these factors, strain rates play a fundamental role in promoting stress corrosion cracking by lowering the threshold for crack propagation [ 31 ].…”

“…The pin-less tool proved to be a superior alternative compared to a conventional tool with a pin because it does not leave a keyhole in the joint at the end of the process. A keyhole reduces mechanical properties [100,107] and becomes a potential site for corrosion [111][112][113]. However, a pin-less tool usually penetrates only into the first sheet, which causes less or no stirring at the bond interface.…”

“…The lower the resistance to polarization, the rate of corrosion is greater in the impedance plot of Nyquist. 49 The difference in electrochemical characteristics of the AISI 316L BM and WM is attributed to the change in mechanical properties and microstructure recrystallization during welding. The diameter of the curves obtained from the Nyquist plot represents the polarization resistance (Rp) equivalent to charge transfer resistance.…”
