Al and its alloys constitute one of the most versatile, economical and attractive materials for a wide range of applications. The 7xxx and 2xxx series alloys are those of achieving the highest mechanical strength among aluminum alloys. In this investigation, using powder metallurgy provides the microstructural and mechanical properties characterizations of non-commercial Al6Cu5Zn alloy by using powder metallurgy. Initial powder sizes are determined and the best condition is obtained for the distribution comprised between 75-106 μm. The samples are sintered at 585 oC, 600 oC and 615 oC during 0.5, 1.5 h and 3 h. It is found that mechanical behavior similar to as-cast Al-Cu based alloys is attained (~ 125 MPa) when the samples at 615 oC during 3 h are sintered. Considering the reduction of energy consumption and metal fumes commonly produced in foundry, Al-Zn powder can be used with Al and Cu elemental powders to constitute an Al6Cu5Zn alloy.

The corrosion process under the complex safe-end feedwater line conditions was investigated via experimental lab testing and numerical simulation. The corrosion of safe-end feedwater lines was controlled through the combination of galvanic corrosion, residual stress, and flow velocity. Firstly, galvanic corrosion occurred once the 20 steel was welded with 316L stainless steel. The pitting corrosion could be observed on the 20 steel side of the weld joint. Secondly, a vortex flow was detected around the welding bump and within the pits. The growth of the pits was accelerated in both the vertical and horizontal directions. Finally, under the residual stress condition, the stress intensity factor (K) at the bottom of the pits was easier to reach than the critical stress intensity factor (KISCC). Then, pitting was transformed into stress corrosion cracking which then propagated along the weld line. Therefore, the critical factor inducing the failure of safe-end feedwater lines was the combined action of galvanic corrosion, residual stress, and flow velocity.

Biofuels, like any high-affinity chemical mixtures; can cause tribological effects at interfaces with metallics (ferrous-nonferrous) and non-metallics due to medium assisted activation of corrosion by unsaturated components. The damages; corrosion and tribological effects on surfaces (abrasive wears and edge/cosmetic corrosion), also include contamination and biofuels replacement due to quality decrease. The most common phenomena include the oxidation of biodiesel which increases its affinity towards metallic counterparts, i.e. automotive parts or processing apparatus, via formation of peroxide compounds by oleic acid, linoleic acid, and linolenic acids. This corrosion receptive medium causes pitting; due to high water content and high electronegativity of dissolved oxygen, and galvanic corrosion; due to high electrical conductivity. The main factors for higher aggressive corrosivity of biofuels can be summarized as high electrical conductivity, polarity, solubility, and hygroscopicity. This paper closely reviews the materials deterioration in contact with biofuels and possible corrosions.
