In this work, NiTi alloy parts were fabricated using laser powder bed fusion (LBPF) from pre-alloyed NiTi powder and in situ alloyed pure Ni and Ti powders. Comparative research on the corrosive and biological properties of both studied materials was performed. Electrochemical corrosion tests were carried out in phosphate buffered saline at 37 °C, and the degradation rate of the materials was described based on Ni ion release measurements. Cytotoxicity, bacterial growth, and adhesion to the surface of the fabricated coupons were evaluated using L929 cells and spherical Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria, respectively. The in situ alloyed NiTi parts exhibit slightly lower corrosion resistance in phosphate buffered saline solution than pre-alloyed NiTi. Moreover, the passive layer formed on in situ alloyed NiTi is weaker than the one formed on the NiTi fabricated from pre-alloyed NiTi powder. Furthermore, in situ alloyed NiTi and NiTi made from pre-alloyed powders have comparable cytotoxicity and biological properties. Overall, the research has shown that nitinol sintered using in situ alloyed pure Ni and Ti is potentially useful for biomedical applications.

Ti-9Mn alloy, widely used in aerospace and hydrogen storage, was recently introduced for use in marine and offshore structures because of its competitive mechanical characteristics. In this study, passive behavior of Ti-9Mn alloy was compared to the commercially pure titanium (cp-Ti). Ti-9Mn exhibited lower charge-transfer resistance than cp-Ti. Under steady-state condition, resistivity at metal /oxide film interface for Ti-9Mn alloy, which increased as fa unction of applied passive potential in range of 0.5 to 1.5 VSCE, was found to be lower than that of cp-Ti. Complex-capacitance (C∞) value for Ti-9Mn alloy was higher than that of cp-Ti. Presence of Mn in the alloy induced significant increase in current density when potential exceeds 1.5 VSCE. Corrosion current density of Ti-9Mn (16.2 ± 4.0 nA cm-2) was three times higher than that of cp-Ti (4.57 ± 0.7 nA cm-2) after 21 days immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl. The study may allow us to realize the full potential passivation behavior of Ti-9Mn for future marine and offshore applications.

Due to its excellent resistance to corrosion, stainless steel has a broad employment scope in oilfields. It is defenceless against microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC). Here, organisms directly cause corrosion. Microorganisms release disruptive metabolites or organisms collect electrons from the metal for breathing to produce energy. They are responsible for the onset or escalation of corrosion caused by previously existing detrimental specialists such as water and carbon dioxide. However, only a few reports on their real success against MIC have been published. Numerous studies on stainless steel, in the presence of microorganisms, are discussed. An analysis of microbiological contamination is also detailed. It focuses on the general perspectives of the various microscopic species involved in biocorrosion. A review on this topic is necessary to understand the various factors considered to select a certain material for a specific purpose. This article combines the various grades of steel, their applications, their studies, and results all in one view making it easier for the reader to understand the importance of microbially influenced corrosion.
