Assessment of sediment mutagenicity in areas under the influence of a contaminated site undergoing a remediation process

Costa et al [] describe the possibility of discharge from this contaminated site and the treated wood storage area into Taquari River, including data on soil pluvial erosion. Due to its characteristics, the site is highly susceptible to potential soil, groundwater and surface water contamination.…”

“…Besides the points on the main river, sampling was performed in a stream on the site, to be called Stream (29°52 ′14.19 ″S 51°43 ′6.73 ″W), with the mouth located upstream from point Ta010. This stream is directly influenced by the industrial area, and is considered one of the main runoff routes (runoff area) for contaminants present in the soil of the study area for Taquari River [FEPAM, ; Costa et al, ]. A simplified list of the main sources of contamination and uses of the sites studied is shown in Table .…”

“…Among the studies already performed in this area, PAHs, PCP, dioxins and heavy metals were detected in soil and house dust samples associated with the presence of mutagenic and cytotoxic activity measured by the Salmonella /microsome assay [FEPAM, ; Pohren et al, ; Coronas et al, ]. It was also possible to define the routes of these contaminants from the soil to the main river, using the same chemical markers (chemical groups of compounds present in the wood preservatives) detected in this drained material in association with the Salmonella /microsome assay [Costa et al, ]. Sites compromised by PAHs and by the mutagenic response in the Taquari river sediment were identified as a likely consequence of this drainage [Costa et al, ].…”

Currently the company is no longer operating and has been included in the environmental impact studies of FEPAM–State Foundation of Environmental Protection, the environmental agency of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and the first phase of the process of intervention in the soil has already been performed, with the removal of the main active sources.…”
