Ambient neutrons may cause significant background for underground experiments. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate their flux and energy spectrum in order to devise a proper shielding. Here, two sets of altogether ten moderated 3 He neutron counters are used for a detailed study of the ambient neutron background in tunnel IV of the Felsenkeller facility, underground below 45 m of rock in Dresden/Germany. One of the moderators is lined with lead and thus sensitive to neutrons of energies higher than 10 MeV. For each 3 He counter moderator assembly, the energy-dependent neutron sensitivity was calculated with the FLUKA code. The count rates of the ten detectors were then fitted with the MAXED and GRAVEL packages. As a result, both the neutron energy spectrum from 10 −9 to 300 MeV and the flux integrated over the same energy range were determined experimentally. The data show that at a given depth, both the flux and the spectrum vary significantly depending on local conditions. Energy-integrated fluxes of (0.61 AE 0.05), (1.96 AE 0.15), and ð4.6 AE 0.4Þ × 10 −4 cm −2 s −1 , respectively, are measured for three sites within Felsenkeller tunnel IV which have similar muon flux but different shielding wall configurations. The integrated neutron flux data and the obtained spectra for the three sites are matched reasonably well by FLUKA Monte Carlo calculations that are based on the known muon flux and composition of the measurement room walls.

For almost three decades it has been known that the study of astro-physically important nuclear reactions between stable nuclei requires the use of low-background, underground accelerator laboratories. The Felsenkeller shallow-underground laboratory in Dresden, shielded by a 45 m thick rock cover, hosts a 5 MV Pelletron ion accelerator with an external sputter ion source (mainly able to provide carbon and oxygen beams) and an internal radio-frequency ion source (providing proton and alpha beams). The reduced muon, neutron and gamma-ray background achieved both with natural and active shielding situate the laboratory well in line with deep underground accelerator labs worldwide and allows highly sensitive nuclear reaction experiments. Currently, measurements affecting the solar fusion and Big Bang nucleosynthesis are ongoing. In addition to in-house research by HZDR and TU Dresden, the lab is an open facility for scientific users worldwide, with beam time applications reviewed by an independent science advisory board. Furthermore, EU-supported transnational access is available via the ChETEC- INFRA network for nuclear astrophysics. A brief introduction to underground nuclear astrophysics, status of the Felsenkeller shallow-underground laboratory and some preliminary results are discussed.

Annual modulation results from three-year exposure of ANAIS-112

ANAIS (annual modulation with NaI scintillators) is a dark matter direct detection experiment consisting of 112.5 kg of NaI(Tl) detectors in operation at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (LSC), in Spain, since August 2017. ANAIS' goal is to confirm or refute in a model independent way the DAMA/LIBRA positive result: an annual modulation in the low-energy detection rate having all the features expected for the signal induced by dark matter particles in a standard galactic halo. This modulation, observed for about 20 years, is in strong tension with the negative results of other very sensitive experiments, but a modelindependent comparison is still lacking. By using the same target material, NaI(Tl), such a comparison is more direct and almost independent in dark matter particle and halo models. Here, we present the annual modulation analysis corresponding to three years of ANAIS data (for an effective exposure of 313.95 kg × y), applying a blind procedure, which updates the one developed for the 1.5 years analysis, and later applied to 2 years. The analysis also improves the background modeling in the fitting of the region of interest rates. We obtain for the best fit in the [1-6] keV ([2-6] keV) energy region a modulation amplitude of −0.0034 AE 0.0042 cpd=kg=keV (0.0003 AE 0.0037 cpd=kg=keV), supporting the absence of modulation in our data, and incompatible with the DAMA/LIBRA result at 3.3 (2.6) σ, for a sensitivity of 2.5 (2.7) σ. Moreover, we include two complementary analyses: a phase-free annual modulation search and the exploration of the possible presence of a periodic signal at other frequencies. Finally, we carry out several consistency checks of our result, and we update the ANAIS-112 projected sensitivity for the scheduled 5 years of operation.
