Bio‐based blends of commercially available polyester based bio thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and castor oil based polyamide 11 (PA11) of different ratios are prepared by melt processing. The blends properties such as shape memory behavior through unconstrained and constrained recovery, interfacial interaction, morphology, dynamic mechanical, rheological, and mechanical behavior are studied. A strong interface between the two polymeric phases due to hydrogen bonding observed through morphology indicates that TPU and PA11 are well compatible. The complex viscosity of blends ranges between that of neat PA11 and TPU. Thermal analysis shows that higher the TPU content lower the melting point (Tm) corresponding to PA11 and the crystallization temperature (Tc) remains unaltered. Adding TPU to PA11 ductility and impact strength of the blends increases significantly with the small reduction in their tensile strength. Shape memory behavior investigation reveals that, blends recover almost 95% of the applied deformation when heated at zero load and they recovered a stress of 1.8–3.2 MPa in constrained recovery during three consecutive thermomechanical cycles. The reported results on bioalloys promotes the usage in multidisciplinary field of intelligent devices, such as ergonomic grips and sports shields. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. In this article, a hydrolyzed EVA copolymer (EVA‐h) was chosen as an interfacial agent of PA12/EVA blends. The effect of EVA‐h addition (5 and 10 wt% in relation to EVA phase) on morphological, interfacial and mechanical properties of the systems was investigated. The polymer blends were melt processed in an interpenetrating co‐rotating twin‐screen extruder. The EVA‐h practically did not change the continuity index of the blends. However, it resulted in the reduction of the size of the dispersed EVA phase in polyamide. EVA‐h contributed to the reduction of the interfacial tension (4.6 – 0.32 mN/m) and the formation of a stable morphology. The EVA‐h improved the interaction between PA12 and EVA phases, being its effect more pronounced on the elastic modulus and hardness properties. Thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) materials are obtained by the reaction of polyol (ether-, ester-, and carbonate-based diols with average molecular weight in the range from 1,000 to 3,000 g/mol) with aliphatic or aromatic diisocyanates. Synthesized materials consist of the hard and soft segments which are separated in different level. All mechanical and thermal properties of TPUs depend on the chemical structure of used monomers, volume fraction, and interaction between the hard and soft segments. Presented work is the review of the synthesis and the structure-properties relationship analysis in the case of TPU. The most popular reactants used for the production of the TPUs have petrochemical-based origin.
