Correlations between total protein, lysozyme, immunoglobulins, amylase, and albumin in stimulated whole saliva during daytime

Abstract: The correlations between salivary proteins and the daytime variations are not known. The present study investigated the within-subject variation of correlations and concentrations between lysozyme, IgA, IgG, IgM, albumin, amylase, and total protein in stimulated whole saliva of healthy adults in the course of a 12-h period. After several practise sessions, unstimulated and stimulated whole saliva samples were collected five times daily (at 8 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m., 5 p.m., and 8 p.m.) from 30 healthy university… Show more

“…In accordance to previous studies we did not find an association between gender on sAA levels (Ben-Aryeh et al, 1986;Nater et al, 2007;Rantonen and Meurman, 2000). Most previous studies failed to find an effect of age on sAA levels (Aguirre et al, 1987;BenAryeh et al, 1986;Salvolini et al, 1999).…”

“…Regarding demographic factors, no sex differences in basal sAA have been found (Nater et al, 2007;Rantonen and Meurman, 2000;Rohleder et al, 2004). Furthermore, basal sAA seemed rather stable across the life span (Aguirre et al, 1987;Ben-Aryeh et al, 1986;Salvolini et al, 1999).…”

“…Minerals in saliva present from food are dissolved by the carbonic acids. In addition, carbonic acid quickly and easily converts itself to carbon dioxide and water under these conditions (Rantonen and Meurman, 2000). When this happens, the dissolved mineral ions precipitate out as solid mineral ions again, but not always as the original mineral molecules.…”

“…whether s-IgA was reported as absolute concentration, secretion rate, ratio to total saliva protein, ratio to saliva albumin or ratio to saliva osmolality). Saliva flow rate has been reported to significantly affect oral health via the flushing of microorganisms and their products into the gut and by providing a continuous supply of both non-immune and immune factors in the mouth (Rantonen and Meurman 2000;Tenovuo 1998). Individuals who suffer from drymouth syndrome (xerostomia) suffer an increased incidence of URTI (Fox et al 1985).…”
