Correlations between student discussion behavior, attitudes, and learning

Abstract: An important result of physics education research is that students' learning and success in a course is correlated with their beliefs, attitudes, and expectations regarding physics. However, it is hard to assess these beliefs for individual students, and traditional survey instruments such as the Maryland Physics Expectations Survey ͑MPEX͒ are intended to evaluate the impact of one or more semesters of instruction on an overall class and improve teaching. In this study, we investigate the possibility of using … Show more

“…In some studies, students' degree of "sophistication" in their beliefs about learning physics are analyzed by scoring their written responses to reflective questions [221,524]. After the researchers have obtained such a quantitative measure, it is analyzed further by statistical correlations with other course measures such as concept inventory scores, course exams, homework, or final course grades.…”

“…Students' views, expectations, and beliefs about physics and science in general were measured using surveys, guided interviews, and observations (Kortemeyer, 2007). Surveys were the most frequently used instruments for this purpose.…”

“…This model, although shown to be mostly decent, by no means represents a thorough account of all causal relations. For instance, learning behaviors may mediate the influence of epistemology on conceptual learning as suggested by Kortemeyer [23]. Therefore, adding more variables into the current model may further increase its veridicality.…”
