Correlations between sound velocity and related properties of glacio-marine sediments: Barents sea

Abstract: Abstract. Statistical analysis of laboratory-measured compressional wave (sound) velocity, porosity, wet bulk density, and selected textural parameters of surface sediments from the Barents Sea reveals that clay content and mean grain size are the best indices to sound velocity. These parameters are followed closely by porosity and wet bulk density, while sand content provides the weakest index. Although Barents Sea surface sediments are characterized by fairly high variability, the results of the present stud… Show more

“…Grain size parameters of Folk (1980) were subsequently determined. The application of the empirically based equations of Orsi and Dunn (1991) enabled the estimation of seismic velocities for individual sedimentological units. Correlation of the established seismic stratigraphy with the sediment data facilitated the conversion of time-based measurements into metres.…”

“…These samples indicate that LASS1 is a poorly sorted, muddy to sandy muddy gravel (average mean grain size 1.61), which can be assigned an average seismic velocity of 1775 m s −1 (after Orsi and Dunn, 1991). As no basal reflector can be seen, only minimum thicknesses for LASF1 and LASF2 are recorded, being ca.…”

“…Two-way travel time from seismic and sonar sections were converted to sediment thickness using a velocity of 1 550 m/s, which is typical for marine clayey sand (Orsi and Dunn, 1991). With measured or presumed parameters, we may apply empirically derived hydraulic equations for mod- Paleo-hydraulic variables can be derived from the morphology of observed or interpreted drainage traces on the printed profiles.…”

“…15 cm). An acoustic velocity of 1520 m/s that has been measured in soft sediments of shelf seas (Hamilton, 1979;Orsi and Dunn, 1991;Kim et al, 2001) was used for assessing thicknesses of disposed sediments on seismic profiles. Considering however that some layers of disposed sediments are rich in organic matter and prone to generate gas that decreases the acoustic velocity, the acoustic properties of disposed sediments may be stratigraphically rather variable.…”
