Correlations between circulating insulin-like growth factor-I and thyroxine and cortisol hormone levels, and some biometrical traits in female brood stocks during the late stages of sex maturation and in juvenile Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus)

Abstract: Relationships between insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and thyroxine (T4) and cortisol hormones were studied in female brood stocks of Persian sturgeon [Acipenser persicus; caught from both sea water (SW) and fresh water (FW)] during late stages of sex maturation. A number of biometrical traits were also studied that could represent the reproductive and/or growth states of brood stocks, and the possible relationship between IGF-I and growth was assessed in juvenile Persian sturgeons between 1 and 4 years o… Show more

“…Levels of basal cortisol in serum, in this study were similar to other previous studies on sturgeons, such as in Scaphirhynchus albus , Acipenser medirostris , Acipenser oxyrinchus , Polyodon spathula and H. huso (Barton, Rahn, Feist, Bollig & Schreck ; Barton, Bollig, Hauskins & Jansen ; Lankford, Adams & Cech ; Baker, Wood, Litvak & Kieffer ; Webb, Allert, Kappenman, Marcos, Feist, Schreck & Shackleton ; Hoseini, Hosseini & Nodeh ; Yousefi, Abtahi & Kenari ). However, basal levels in this study were considerably lower than those of previous studies on the same species (Kamangar, Rasaee, Amiri, Abtahi & Bahmani ; 35 ng mL −1 ; Hajirezaee, Rafiee & Hushangi ; 100 ng mL −1 ; Falahatkar, Akhavan et al . ; 10 ng mL −1 ; Falahatkar, Poursaeid, Efatpanah, Meknatkhah & Biswas ; 18–45 ng mL −1 ).…”

“…Such differences may be due to differences in: (1) life stage as Kamangar et al . () and Hajirezaee et al . () worked on broods (but juveniles were used in the present study), and (2) water temperature as Falahatkar, Akhavan et al .…”

“…Plasma lactate levels were analyzed based on the colorimetric method described by Barton et al (). Analysis of insulin‐like growth factor I (IGF‐I) was measured by RIA according to Kamangar et al (), using a commercial kit (Mediagnost, Reutlingen, Germany). As both purified sturgeon IGF‐I and specific antibody against this antigen were unavailable, IGF‐I concentrations were measured using a polyclonal antihuman IGF‐I and human IGF‐I as antigen, following the manufacturer's instructions.…”

“…Serum cortisol level was determined using a commercial RIA kit (Coated Tube Cortisol 125 I RIA Kit, BNIBT, Beijing, China) according to the manufacturer's instruction. The assay using the cortisol RIA kit was validated by demonstrating parallelism between the sample dilution curve and the standard curve (Kamangar et al 2007). In this assay, 500 ll 125 I-cortisol and 25 ll fish serum/cortisol standard were added into the assay tube coated with anticortisol antibody and incubated for 45 min at 37°C.…”
