Correlations among plasma silicon, magnesium and calcium in patients with knee osteoarthritis – analysis in consideration of gender

Abstract: Introduction and objective. Osteoarthrits (OA) is a complex, chronic disorder of cartilage and bone, related to homeostasis of bioelements. The current study aimed at evaluation of correlations between plasma silicon, magnesium and ionized calcium in OA patients in consideration to gender. Materials and method. The study comprised 59 patients aged 69.5±9.0 years (18 males aged 66.8±9.2; 41 females aged 70.7±8.8), admitted to the Trauma and Orthopaedic Ward of the Independent Public Health Care Centre in Łęczna… Show more

“…In the treatment of radiographic knee osteoarthritis, the presence of a high calcium level may possibly have a preventive impact OA. Also, Musik I et al (21), discovered that calcium levels in OA patients were not substantially different from those of the control group; however, this did not correlate with our findings.…”

“…Magnesium levels in OA patients were similarly shown not to be substantially different from those of the control group by Musik I et al (21). In females, a considerable drop compared to the relevant control was detected, and this did not coincide with the findings of our research.…”

“…On the one hand, obesity acts to cause OA by increasing the bioburden; on the other hand, intermediate metabolites produced during lipid metabolism (e.g., arachidonic acid) aggravate local inflammation and accelerate the development of OA. In some specific cases, such as ligament injuries, overweight individuals, and age-related muscle weakening, the subchondral bone undergoes potential changes and eventually the overlying articular cartilage is affected [ 34 ].…”

“…Different from the results in our study, those obtained Musik et al showed that the Plasma Mg concentrations in patients with osteoarthritis of the spine and those in control subjects were not significantly different. In contrast, there was a significant difference between the concentrations in women in both groups, which may suggest a link between the higher prevalence of the disease in women and Mg deficiency in the body [ 28 ]. However, in our study, there was no difference in serum Mg concentration depending on sex.…”
