ABSTRACT. Several thin clay-rich horizons occur interbedded with Mississippian (Viséan) limestones in the Namur-Dinant Basin, southern Belgium. These have been interpreted as diagenetically altered volcanic ash layers (bentonites). Whole-rock geochemical analysis of several bentonites was undertaken to provide insight into their original magmatic composition. Ratios of several trace elements that are considered to be immobile during diagenetic alteration and indicators of petrogenetic processes suggest that most of the bentonites were originally trachyandesitic to trachytic ashes. Furthermore, the coarse grain size of euhedral zircon phenocrysts (up to 400 µm in length) suggests a proximal volcanic source. Zircon U-Pb isotopic ages and wholerock geochemical data from these bentonites were compared with literature data from volcanic and intrusive rocks in adjacent areas, and suggest that the bentonites were sourced from volcanoes within the Variscan orogenic belt.KEYWORDS: altered volcanic ash, cinerite, whole-rock geochemistry, trace element geochemistry, X-ray diffraction analysis.http://dx

Mississippian (Early Carboniferous) sequence stratigraphy of the Rhenish Kulm Basin, Germany

ABSTRACT. The Rhenish Kulm Basin is a deeper-water foreland basin developing in front of the Variscan Orogen in Germany. Three major facies interfinger and might overwhelm the adjacent one in time. These are (1) internal siliciclastic flysch facies, (2) central starved basin facies, and (3) calciturbidite facies. Calciturbidites are derived from the Northwest European shallow-water carbonate platform or not preserved intrabasinal sources. Besides, a deep intrabasinal swell facies is characterized by condensed successions. Diagnostic rock types within each facies enable the recognition of systems tracts of third-order depositional sequences. The interpretation of faunal developments and bioevents support these attributions. Hence, for the first time a sequence stratigraphic subdivision of the Rhenish Kulm Basin into 13 sequences is achieved, ranging from the latest Devonian to the early Namurian. The lower nine sequences are correlated with the Dinantian sequences earlier established on the Belgium shallow-water platform. Two Brigantian sequences 10 and 11 are identified and, despite the prograding Variscan Orogen, the two lower Namurian (Pendleian, Arnsbergian) sequences 12 and 13. The results demonstrate the successful application of sequence stratigraphy in a deeper-water basin, show that sea-level changes overrule the general, more gradual tectonic development of the basin, and prove the Palaeotethyan, if not global isochroneity of Mississippian sequences.

Conodonts of the genus Lochriea offer high‐resolution biostratigraphical differentiation of the upper Mississippian (Carboniferous). In particular, L. ziegleri is regarded as the most suitable index taxon for recognition of a revised Viséan–Serpukhovian boundary and selection of a Global Stratotype Section and Point. Mixed carbonate‐siliciclastic Carboniferous sections from western Ireland demonstrate that gradual morphological evolution is expressed within the Lochriea lineage, evidenced by P1‐elements with progressively more complex ornament appearing in a pulsed fashion in the Late Viséan. Significant diversification of the Lochriea conodonts occurs below the currently recognized base of the Namurian (identified by ammonoids), with which the basal Serpukhovian has been correlated in the past. The First Appearance Datum (FAD) of L. ziegleri in the Lugasnaghta Section of western Ireland is apparently coincident with the FAD's of other complexly ornamented Lochriea species (e.g. L. cruciformis) and corresponds with the Irish and British P2a ammonoid biozone and the lower part of the upper Cf6δ (MFZ15) foraminiferal biozone. The FAD of L. ziegleri in Ireland is closely related to other Lochriea morphotypes with complex ornament, which are difficult to identify to species level using current species definitions. These forms, recorded from the three sections examined (St Brendan's Well, Kilnamona and Lugasnaghta), may partly be explained as abnormal growth histories, evolutionary intermediate forms, etc. In some instances, however, the apparently consistent and novel morphotypes suggest that current Lochriea taxonomy needs to be re‐examined. Furthermore, given the close association of the morphologies with asymmetric complex ornament and L. ziegleri, these taxa may hold significance as biostratigraphical tools in their own right.

Correlation of the base of the Serpukhovian Stage (Mississippian) in NW Europe

Abstract: Europe, this may be as a result of collection failure. The base of the Serpukhovian based on the FAD of Lochriea ziegleri will be in the middle of the Brigantian regional Sub-stage, a horizon substantially older than the base of the Namurian Regional Stage.
