Correlation of resting heart rate with anthropometric factors and serum biomarkers in a population-based study: Fasa PERSIAN cohort study

Abstract: Background: There is a positive association between raised resting heart rate (RHR), and all causes of mortality and shorter life expectancy. Several serum biomarkers and some anthropometric factors can affect the resting heart rate. This study aimed to investigate the determinants of resting heart rate in a large random sample of the Iranian population. Material and methods: It is a standardized, retrospective study and the subjects were chosen from the baseline survey of the Prospective Epidemiological Resea… Show more

“…More than 30% of hypertensive patients have a RHR of over 80 beats/min, and this phenomenon is common among the young and middle-aged [ 4 ]. The existing studies on HR management mostly focus on medication management to control RHR [ 7 , 8 ]. However, there are few reports on the education of HR management for this patient population, let alone the awareness of the damage to the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular systems caused by increased RHR.…”

“…In this regard, these authors indicated that a high intensity aerobic exercise program caused a reduction in RHR and a decrease in BMI [ 44 ]. Likewise, a cohort study with 9975 people of the general population, Goorakani et al [ 45 ] observed that RHR shows a positive correlation with BMI. Indeed, high BMI values have a positive association with causes of mortality and coronary heart disease, especially in patients with a high RHR [ 46 ].…”

“…Further, QT prolongation is associated with increased of cardiovascular risk, even beyond the rare long QT syndromes 35 , and with incrementally increased risk in advanced ages 36 . These general characteristics are also true for increased heart rate and for leftward shifting of the frontal plane QRS axis [37][38][39][40] . The other measures included in the score track changes in the vectorcardiographic QRS and T, and in T-wave complexity by singular value decomposition.…”
