Correlation of rectum‐associated lymph nodules with the development of experimentally induced acute colonic inflammation in rats

Abstract: The pathological changes of ulcerative colitis were well correlated with the development of both RALN and DSS-induced lymph nodules. The immunological reaction that occurred in DSS-induced lymph nodules is significantly associated with the expansion of colitis from the lower region of rectum to the upper region of rectum and colon.

“…Rectum-associated lymph nodule (RALN) is an important site for mediating the inflammatory process in the rat colon, corresponding to the Peyer's patch in the intestine. 17 The RALN is formed as a single lymph node tissue in the terminal rectal region of the rat, in contrast to numerous formations of Peyer's patch lymphoid tissue in the intestine. In addition, its structure is similar to that of other peripheral lymphoid tissues and consists of a number of lymphoid follicles in which T and B cells are located in an organized manner.…”

“…However, it is difficult to serially follow the developmental process of a single structure such as the Peyer's patch because of its formation at very early stages of development, even in the fetal rat. “…In addition to PPs, there is also an indication of the involvement of other lymphoid follicle structures in IBD manifestations. For instance, lymphoid nodules in the rectum that resemble PPs and contain elevated numbers of macrophages; CD4 + and CD8 + T-cells in mice with DSS-induced colitis, were linked with proximal disease extension [85]. On the other end of the colon, colitis mice with a cecal patch had an enhanced B-cell activation in these patches during the early phase of the disease [86].…”
