Correlation of Presence of Candida and Epithelial Dysplasia in Oral Mucosal Lesions

Abstract: AIMS AND OBJECTIVESThe aims of the study were to investigate the presence of Candidal organisms in oral mucosal lesions, by studying PAS stained cytosmear and histopathological sections of mucosal lesions. The Aim and Objective: The present study was designed to evaluate the correlation between presence of Candida organisms and epithelial dysplasia in various oral mucosal lesions associated with areca nut and tobacco use. Materials and Methods:A total of 50 individuals were selected, between age range of 19-70… Show more

“…Several other studies have confirmed the hyperplastic response of the epithelium when invaded by candida [21]. A significant positive correlation between fungal infection and moderate and severe epithelial dysplasia has been demonstrated [22]. Their study also showed significant worsening of epithelial dysplasias associated with fungal infection.…”

“…Many studies have suggested that the production of carcinogenic acetaldehyde by Candida contributes to epithelial dysplasia, and some of them have shown that Candida albicans isolated from potentially malignant disorders can produce carcinogenic substances [27][28][29]. Because this study also showed that the antifungal drug had a positive effect on 3 lesions, we indicated the probable presence of antifungals effective against leukoplakia.…”
