Correlation of Prenatal and Postnatal MRI Findings in Schizencephaly

Abstract: BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Schizencephaly is a rare malformation of the brain characterized by a gray matter-lined defect extending from the pial surface to the lateral ventricles. The purpose of this study was to correlate imaging findings of schizencephaly and associated anomalies on fetal and postnatal MR imaging and assess possible changes that may occur from the prenatal-to-postnatal state.

“…Although normal optic chiasm, infundibulum and septum pellucidum are visualized on fetal MRI from 27 weeks onward, most cases of optic nerve hypoplasia are missed on prenatal MRI [8,37]. Optic nerve hypoplasia is rarely identified prenatally and is observed postnatally in only about 50% of cases.…”

“…7 Hydranencephaly, hemihydranencephaly, and schizencephaly are also caused by prenatal disruptive lesions involving one or both cerebral hemispheres. 8 The spectrum of infratentorial disruptions is wide and includes some forms of cerebellar agenesis, unilateral cerebellar hypoplasia, some forms of global cerebellar hypoplasia, cerebellar clefts, forms of unilateral dysplasia with cysts, and vanishing cerebellum in Chiari II malformation. [9][10][11][12][13] The vast majority of infratentorial disruptions primarily involve the cerebellum, whereas disruptions affecting primarily the brainstem are very rare.…”
