Correlation of Ionized Magnesium with the Parameters of Oxidative Stress as Potential Biomarkers in Patients with Anxiety and Depression: A Pilot Study

Abstract: Background Magnesium (Mg) is the second most abundant intracellular cation. Ionized Mg is the only active form of Mg. The concentration of ionized Mg could be a potentially novel biomarker for anxiety and depression. Aim The aim of this study was to assess the serum concentration of ionized Mg and its correlation with biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation in patients with anxiety and depression. Methods In this study included 93 respondents were divided into 3 groups: C (control group—18 respondents)… Show more

“…In anxious patients, malondialdehyde had a positive correlation between the parameters of oxidative stress with ionized Mg [ 78 ]. In a recent study, the authors studied a lipid oxidative stress marker (malonic dialdehyde) and showed an increase in oxidative stress and magnesium in patients with anxiety.…”

“…Whittle et al showed that mice fed a low Mg-containing diet (10% of the daily requirement) exhibit depression-like behavior and elevated expression of N(G), N(G)-dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase 1 (DDAH1), manganese-superoxide dismutase (MnSOD), and glutamate dehydrogenase 1 (GDH1) related to oxidative stress [ 110 ]. Another study also showed that depression is associated with a decrease in magnesium concentrations in the human body, which leads to an increase in GPX associated with oxidative stress [ 111 ].…”
