Purpose To evaluate the resolution time and the recurrence rate of acute central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) after spontaneous resolution and low-fluence photodynamic therapy (PDT). Methods Case-control study: The CSC patients who were admitted to our clinic for the first time were included. No treatment was given during the first 6 months. Patients were treated with PDT after 6 months from the initial signs of the disease, if they did not show any sign of resolution. The patients who showed a significant decrease in subretinal fluid after month 6 were not scheduled for PDT. The primary outcomes were the resolution time and the recurrence rate after the first episode. Secondary outcome measures were the change in BCVA and CRT during the follow up. Results A total of 77 consecutive eyes of 77 patients were included, 41 eyes (53.2%) with spontaneously resolved CSC and 36 eyes (46.8%) with PDT-treated CSC. The initial resolution time was 4.1 ± 3.2 months in spontaneous resolution group, and 8.1 ± 0.8 months in PDT group, respectively (Po0.001). The recurrence rate was 51.2% in spontaneous resolution group, and 25% in PDT group (P = 0.01). The change in BCVA from baseline to the last follow-up visit was statistically significant in both groups (P = 0.002, P = 0.003, respectively). The change in CRT from baseline to the last follow up was also statistically significant in both groups (P = 0.002, P = 0.003, respectively). Conclusions The recurrence rate of acute CSC was lower in PDT-treated patients than the spontaneously resolved patients.

Purpose To evaluate the efficacy and safety of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with halfdose verteporfin in patients with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CCSC) and retinal functional changes, by functional acuity contrast test (FACT). Methods In this study, 27 eyes of 24 patients with CCSC were treated with PDT with halfdose verteporfin. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central foveal thickness (CFT) and resolution of subretinal fluid on optical coherence tomography (OCT), and leakage on fluorescein angiography (FA) and indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) were assessed. Contrast sensitivity test was performed at baseline and at 12th month for investigating retinal functional changes. Results The mean follow-up period was 25.33 ± 11.08 months. The mean age was 43.7±8.6 years. Seventeen patients were male (70.8%) and seven patients were female (29.2%). Post PDT at 1st, 3rd, 6th, 12th month and at last follow-up, BCVA were significantly improved compared with the baseline BCVA (Po0.001), and CFT post PDT were significantly thinner than the baseline measurement (Po0.001). There was significant difference between pre-and post-PDT 12th month contrast sensitivities at all five different spatial frequency channels (Po0.01). Conclusions Half-dose PDT is an effective and safe method in the treatment of CCSC with anatomical and functional success. The measurement of contrast sensitivity by FACT can be useful for evaluating the functional effectiveness of half-dose PDT for CCSC.

Purpose To investigate the relationship between retinal sensitivity (RS) assessed by microperimetry (MP) and retinal structural changes in patients with resolved central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). Methods Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) examination and MP tests were performed in patients with resolved CSC. Point-to-point correlation was performed between RS and corresponding retinal structural changes using Pearson's correlation analysis. In addition, in a 1-mm zone in the central fovea, a correlation was calculated between the mean RS and the mean central retinal thickness (CRT). Results Eighty-four eyes were analyzed. The total number of MP test points was 1092 (84 eyes Â 13 points). The mean RS and retinal point thickness (RPT) of all test points were 13.53±3.84 dB and 208.6±48.0 mm, respectively. The RS and RPT were significantly decreased in the test points with loss of the ellipsoid portion of the inner segments (EPIS) (Po0.0001). Within the 1-mm foveal center zone, there was a significant correlation between mean RS and mean CRT (r ¼ 0.432, Po0.0001) and between RS and the corresponding RPT (r ¼ 0.339, Po0.0001). Conclusion RS was dependent on the status of the EPIS in patients with resolved CSC. The correlation between mean RS and mean CRT was compatible with the point-topoint correlation between RS and the corresponding RPT.
