Correlation of infrared pupillometers and CCD-camera imaging from aberrometry and videokeratography for determining scotopic pupil size

Abstract: The Zywave wavefront sensor with the fixating target turned off using the study settings and light conditions provided measurements of scotopic pupil diameter that were closest to the reference values (Procyon). With the other devices (Colvard pupillometer, Zywave aberrometer with the fixating target switched on, Wasca aberrometer, and Orbscan topographer), the difference was statistically significant.

“…These differences could be due to the different illumination systems used in the studies: infrared light below 1 lux was used for the pupillometers and visible light was used in our study. However, similar results were obtained regarding pupil diameters measured with the Orbscan II (26) and those obtained in the present study.…”

“…To our knowledge, there has only been one previously published study regarding the measurement of the PD with a non-invasive anterior segment device (26) . In this case two infrared pupillometers were compared with the OrbscanII and two aberrometers (Table 1 summarizes their results).…”

“…Table 3 shows that Neuroptics measurements agree better with Procyon measurements than with those by other devices. 17,18 Although the LOAs between Procyon and Neuroptics measurements were smaller than any of the devices reported in Kohnen et al, 17,18 devices such as the Colvard (monocular), Zywave (with the target off, binocular), and Wasca (binocular) offer measurements that agree more closely to the Procyon's than with those of the other devices in Table 3. Nonetheless, as suggested by the authors, none of these devices is recommended as a primary means of determining appropriate OZ or intraocular lens diameters for refractive surgery.…”

“…Simpler models of this device have been described. 13,[17][18][19] Using the accompanying software, Dynamic PupilFit version 4.30.33 (Procyon Instruments Ltd.), the device was set to take 200 frames (multiple measurements) at a speed of 25 frames per second at the scotopic illuminance level in a darkened room.…”
