Correlation of ejection fraction and infarct size estimated from the total CK released in patients with acute myocardial infarction.

Abstract: SUMMARY In order to investigate the relation between infarct size in acute myocardial infarction and left ventricular ejection fraction early after recovery, total creatine kinase released was calculated by the modified method of Sobel et al. (1972) from the serial determinations of serum CK activity; left ventriculography and selective coronary arteriography were performed at a mean of 2 months after the onset of infarction in 34 patients with acute myocardial infarction. Of 34 patients, 32 (94%) had left ve… Show more

“…However, it is important to remember that the largest of these studies [23] included only 36 patients who were treated with thrombolytic ther apy and that the regression line in all these studies [7,12,13,21,23] was steeper and shifted from that of patients treated conventionally. Similar results were also demon strated in experimental studies with canine models of reperfusion [3,14].…”

“…It is reported that infarct size can be estimated from total CK released and is directly related to the area of abnormally contracting segment. However, elevated total CK might not precisely indicate the occurrence of MI as its levels may also be elevated due to muscle damage or acute renal failure (Hori et al, 1979). Khat extract induced dose-dependent elevations of total CK and AST following sub-chronic administration.…”

“…Several echocardiographic and radionuclide angiographic studies attest to the same conclusion. The other prognostic determinant in the post infarction patient is significant coronary artery disease in the noninfarcted myocardium.3),4),14),18) Exercise electrocardiography with or without thallium-201 scintigraphy has had a good track record in predicting future cardiac events in patients showing ischemia with stress.1)-3),14), 15) Early (predischarge) exercise electrocardiographic results have been utilized to predict future cardiac events and assess the patient for cardiac rehabilitation. Early testing is especially favored since most cardiac events occur early after the first infarction and usually within the first 6 months.…”
