Correlation of Caveolin-1 Expression with Prognosis in Patients with Gastric Cancer after Gastrectomy

Abstract: Background: Upregulation of caveolin-1 (Cav-1) expression is correlated with histopathological grade and poor prognosis in several human cancers. However, in gastric cancer, its clinical utility as a useful prognostic molecular marker remains unclear. Methods: The prognostic importance of Cav-1 expression was retrospectively analyzed by immunohistochemistry in 148 patients with gastric cancer who had undergone radical gastrectomy. Results: Cav-1 expression was positive in 23 (15.5%) patients and negative in 12… Show more

“…On the other hand, the CAV1 gene can promote cancer by inhibiting apoptosis and promoting tumour metastasis and drug resistance 22,23 . Previous studies have shown that high expression of CAV1 is positively correlated with disease progression and poor prognosis of GC patients 24,25 , which is consistent with our ndings (HR value of CAV1 < 1). Some studies have explored the possible mechanism by which CAV1 affects the prognosis of GC patients.…”

“…High Cav 1 expression is also associated with RAF-ERK signaling, cell cycle progression and colony forming ability ( 54 ). Patients with Cav 1-positive tumors, post-gastrectomy, display decreased disease-free and overall survival ( 55 ). Moreover, Cav 1 expression is associated with poor prognosis in GC ( 56 ).…”

“…In Conversely, high stromal caveolin-1 in early prostate cancer was found to correlate with decreased malignancy, longer survival and favorable prognosis when managed by watchful waiting (134). In gastric cancers post-tumor resection, high caveolin-1 expression correlated with tumor relapse and lymph node metastasis (135,136). However, in colorectal cancer-derived liver metastasis post-hepatectomy, weak stromal caveolin-1 expression was a predictor of poor prognosis (137).…”
