Correlation of a Graded Step-Test Protocol to the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test in Healthy Population

Abstract

Purpose The aim of this study was to determine if the Step Test Protocol (STP) can achieve a similar trajectory of cardiovascular response in healthy individuals as the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test (BCTT). We hypothesized that there would be a significant correlation between heart rate and rate of perceived exertion in healthy individuals between the BCTT and the STP. Methods Twenty-two participants (males 9; females 13) individuals, with no previous history of concussion or underlying respiratory, cardiovascular, or musculoskeletal injury, performed both the STP and BCTT in succession. Resting heart rate was measured prior to activity and taken again throughout each exercise test. Rate of perceived exertion was also taken at the end of each stage for each exercise test. The percentage of the age-related predicted maximum heart rate for each stage was calculated and a Pearson correlation was used to calculate the relationship between the tests. Results All participants completed stage 5 of the STP and stage 8 of the BCTT. A positive correlation was found between the percentage of age-related predicted maximum heart rate achieved during the STP and BCTT for stages completed by all participants. Conclusions The STP produces a similar physiological effect as the BCTT in a healthy population.
