Correlation between veterinary antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance in food-producing animals: a report on seven countries

Abstract: These remarkably high coefficients indicate that, at a national level, the level of use of specific antimicrobials strongly correlates to the level of resistance towards these agents in commensal E. coli isolates in pigs, poultry and cattle. However, data restraints reveal the need for further detail in collection and harmonization of antimicrobial resistance and use data in Europe.

“…Higher levels of fluoroquinolone resistance were detected in E. coli cultured from imported broiler chicken meat (22%), compared to Danish poultry meat (12%) and broiler chicken's faecal samples (7%). The correlation between the geographical source of isolates and resistance detected tends to follow fluoroquinolone usage or selection pressure (Chantziaras et al, 2014). After the USA banned the use of fluoroquinolones in food-producing animals in 2005, fluoroquinolone resistance in E. coli cultured from poultry decreased from 1% to 0% (Doyle et al, 2013;Tadesse et al, 2012).…”

“…Isolation of ARB is frequent in fresh and processed meat from slaughterhouses, processing plants, packaging materials and retail outlets (Aarestrup, 2004). There is a high degree of correlation between veterinary antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance in food-producing pigs, poultry, and cattle (Chantziaras et al, 2014). The overuse of drugs in veterinary practices related to food animals, pet, and human medical treatments contributes to bacterial mutation and acquired resistance (Holmes et al, 2016).…”

“…Extremely high rates of antimicrobial consumption have been recorded in aquaculture farming in middle and lowincome countries 43,44 . It is believed that growth in aquaculture production systems will increase the antimicrobial consumption and contamination of the aquatic environments with antimicrobial residues in future 45 .…”
