Correlation between the Fusion Dynamics of Cells Growing in vitro and Variations of Neutron Intensity Near the Earth’s Surface

Abstract: Kuzhevskii, Vashenyuk, Zhirov. † The experiments with cell cultures, which were carried out in the period of solar proton events accompanied by an increase in the rate of neutron counts near the earth's surface (the ground-level enhancements (GLEs)), have shown that, in the GLE period, cells of all cell lines began to fuse [1,2]. The time course of cell fusion in different cultures in the main peaks coincided with an increase in the rate of neutron count [3,4], which is determined by an increase in the int… Show more

“…Biological effects, namely an increase in cell fusion indices for different celllines, were found to be significantly correlated with the neutron count rate at the Earth's surface (Belisheva et al, 2005;Grießmeier et al, 2005b). Similar, but much stronger and more diverse effects were observed during large solar particle events, where solar cosmic rays dominate over galactic cosmic rays.…”

“…If parts of the cosmic-ray shower reach the planetary surface, one could expect that biological systems there can be strongly influenced and even damaged by this secondary radiation. This expectation is backed up by experimental evidence, which shows that during Ground Level Enhancements (extreme events where large numbers of secondary cosmic rays reach the Earth's surface) DNA lesions on the cellular level increase considerably (Belisheva et al, 2005;Grießmeier et al, 2005;Belisheva et al, 2006;Dartnell, 2011;Belisheva et al, 2012, and references therein). In the case of Earth, muons contribute 75% of the equivalent dose rate at the surface (O'Brien et al, 1996).…”

“…Biological effects, namely an increase of cell fusion indices in different cell-lines, were found to be significantly correlated with the neutron count rate at the Earth's surface (Belisheva et al 2005). Because these experiments were undertaken during quiet solar conditions (August 1990), the change in the neutron count rate is either caused by a variation of the atmospheric pressure (which changes the efficiency of atmospheric shielding) or by a variation in the galactic cosmic ray flux outside the Earth's magnetosphere.…”
