Correlation between Size-Dependent Luminescent Properties and Local Structure around Eu3+ Ions in YBO3:Eu Nanocrystals:  An XAFS Study

Abstract: X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS), a powerful tool for the study of the local environment of a particular element, especially the luminescent center, was introduced to investigate the correlation between luminescent properties and local structure around Eu3+ ions in YBO3:Eu nanocrystals, which was prepared by a more facile sol−gel pyrolysis process in our previous work and which exhibited size-dependent chromaticity, that is, a relatively better chromaticity could be obtained in the smaller-s… Show more

“…Most research work basically focuses on rare-earth oxide [1,2], phosphates [3][4][5][6], and borates. Inorganic fluorides nanocrystals doped with rare-earth ions have shown unique luminescence properties and hence are good candidates as host materials with correspondingly useful applications in optical telecommunication, lasers, new optoelectronic devices as well as in diagnostics and biological labels [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. The fluoride lattice provides for the high coordination number for the doped rare-earth ions and the high ionicity of the rare-earth to fluorine bond results in a very wide band gap, low vibrational energies and low probability of inter-configurational transitions.…”

“…Among them, RE (rare earth) doped orthoborate materials with a hexagonal crystal structure have attracted worldwide attention since they possess acceptable chemical stability and their ultraviolet (UV) transparency and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) optical damage threshold are significant [1][2][3][4]. So, they have been used as lamp and plasma display panels (PDP) for a long time.…”
