Correlation between serum prealbumin and prognosis of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma after hepatectomy

Abstract: Objective To determine whether serum prealbumin levels are associated with long‐term survival after hepatectomy in patients with primary hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC). Methods A consecutive sample of 526 patients with HCC who underwent potentially curative hepatectomy from August 2007 to August 2010 was retrospectively analyzed. Patients were classified as having normal or reduced serum prealbumin based on cut‐off values of 200 or 182 mg/L. Results Multivariate analysis identified the preoperative level of ser… Show more

“…We found that preoperative serum prealbumin level may be a useful marker for predicting long-term overall and disease-free survival, in the presence or absence of liver cirrhosis. These findings are consistent with previous studies 27, 28. A previous study used a cut-off value of 170 mg/L for preoperative prealbumin level compared to 200 mg/L in the present study.…”

“…They found only 29% (437/1483) patients with reduced prealbumin level, lower than the 51.9% (700/1349) in the present study 28. Our previous small study used a cut-off value of 182 mg/L for preoperative prealbumin level 27. Other studies found that prealbumin level lower than 170 mg/L is an independent risk factor for hepatic insufficiency after hepatic resection 26, 29.…”

“…Notably, serum prealbumin, a plasma protein synthesized by hepatocytes, is an indicator of nutritional status in cancer patients. The present study demonstrated a linear dose-response relationship between serum prealbumin levels and the prognosis of HCC after hepatectomy, suggesting that higher levels of prealbumin may reduce the risk of death in HCC patients [20]. Altogether, the extent of tumor involvement, as reflected by these factors, heavily determines the risk of death.…”

“…21 Furthermore, prealbumin has recently been identified as an independent prognostic factor in various cancers. 39,40 Based on this theoretical advantage, CRP/PAlb may be more sensitive and superior to CRP/Alb for tumor prognosis. In this study, we found that CRP/PAlb ratio was more useful for predicting the prognosis of patients with esophageal cancer compared with CRP/Alb ratio.…”
