Correlation between Refractive Error, Corneal Power, and Thickness in a Large Population with a Wide Range of Ametropia

Abstract: In the myopia group, the KM showed close correspondence with KA and an inverse relationship with SE and CCT. In hyperopes, an inverse correlation between the KM and SE was found, but no correlation with CCT was evident.

“…Contradictory results have been found concerning the relationship between myopia and central corneal thickness. Some found a positive correlation with myopia, some found a negative correlation with myopia, while the others found no correlation . Further, in light of controversial results concerning the relationship between myopia and corneal thickness measurements, several studies evaluating the thickness of corneal layers in contact lens wearers did not include both refraction‐matched subjects and subjects with emmetropia as control groups.…”

They compared the corneal layer thicknesses of SCL group only with those of myopic subjects without a history of soft contact lens wear, which might cause misleading conclusions to be drawn.…”

“…During the past decade, central corneal thickness (CCT) has been wildly evaluated in the general population for its effect on the accuracy of intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements and its importance in pre‐operative assessments in corneal surgery. It has been noticed that age, gender, race and environmental and genetic factors can affect CCT and it is also affected by ocular parameters, such as axial length, refraction, corneal curvature and IOP in particular.…”
