Correlation between plasma ferritin level and gestational diabetes mellitus and its impact on fetal macrosomia

Abstract: Aims/IntroductionTo explore the relationship between plasma iron levels and gestational diabetes mellitus, as well as its impact on macrosomia.Materials and MethodsWe retrospectively compared ferritin level and other characteristics between pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and pregnant women without GDM. The correlation between the levels of plasma ferritin, glucose and hemoglobin was explored. Meanwhile, we assessed the risk factors of macrosomia. Furthermore, we explored the relationsh… Show more

“…However, confounding variables, including ethnicity, sun exposure and seasonality, can be difficult to control for, and as such the independent relationship between vitamin D status and GDM remains uncertain [40]. High intake of heme iron and increased plasma ferritin have consistently been associated with increased risk of GDM and T2DM [41][42][43][44].…”

“…Thus, it is still unclear whether high ferritin in the blood is a cause or result of diabetes [78]. Nevertheless, serum ferritin level test can still be used in the early diagnosis of T2DM and gestational diabetes [87][88][89][90].…”
