Correlation between optic disc perfusion and glaucomatous severity in patients with open-angle glaucoma: an optical coherence tomography angiography study

Abstract: Angiograms demonstrated a reduced disc flow index and vessel density in glaucoma, and this reduction was closely related to GCC thickness. This indicated that measurement of disc perfusion by angio-OCT might be important for the monitoring of glaucoma.

“…Two studies have assessed the intravisit and intervisit repeatability of ONH perfusion using a split-spectrum amplitudedecorrelation angiography (SSADA) algorithm, another OCTA technique. 39,40 High intravisit (≤1.2% mean CV) and intervisit repeatability (≤4.2% mean CV) of ONH perfusion measurements were detected using OCTA with the SSADA algorithm, further supporting and strengthening the proposal that OCTA-based methods provide reproducible and reliable measurement of ONH perfusion and may be suitable for clinical practice.…”

“…In the authors' opinion, this parameter was of high diagnostic value for early detection of glaucoma. The possible role of OCT-A in glaucoma monitoring was demonstrated in the recent studies by Wang et al 21,22 and Lévêque et al 23 The authors found a significant decrease in the ONH vessel density in advanced glaucoma patients as compared with healthy subjects, as well as its correlation with MD, RNFL, and GCC thickness, but only in POAG and not in the normal controls. According to Lévêque et al, 23 the temporal sector of ONH is a critical study region for monitoring progression of glaucoma patients.…”

“…[19][20][21] The authors found reduced ONH blood vessel density that was associated with structural and functional glaucomatous damage. [22][23][24][25] The purpose of the present study was to assess vascularity of the macular area in patients with glaucoma by means of OCT-A.…”
