Correlation between Obesity and Seroma Following Modified Radical Mastectomy

Abstract: Introduction. Obesity becomes one of concern for surgeon as it provides additional morbidity in breast cancer. It influences the healing process negatively, and increase the complications following mastectomy. The most often found complication is seroma. Its incidence in obese is found higher than non-obese patient. Studies evaluating the correlation between obesity and seroma showed controversy. Hence, we run a study aimed to find out such a correlation in our characteristics. Method. We conducted cross secti… Show more

“…On the other hand, the drain device itself is a foreign object that can stimulate the further inflammatory process and produce exudate, so a drain that is installed for too long can increase the production of seroma and cause discomfort and pain to the patient and prolong the treatment period. 6 Until now when the optimal time to remove the drain is still controversial. However, there is a tendency for surgeons to remove the drain immediately after mastectomy.…”

“…[24][25][26][27] Obesity is associated with increased seroma formation by lymphatic system alteration, leading to dehiscence and implant exposure. [28][29][30][31][32] Furthermore, the logistic regression analysis of the subset of patients with ADM placement in implant-based breast reconstruction had similar findings with regard to risk factors for explantation. DTI procedures had more than two-fold increase in odds of explantation (P < 0.001) over tissue expander placement, and hypertension, obesity, and tobacco use were also associated with increased odds of implant removal (Table 5).…”

“…In this study, the reduction in seroma production was measured by calculating the drain removal time when seroma production was <30 cc seroma/day. Using faster drain removal, a smaller number of seroma production is expected (Yilmaz et al 2011, Kurnia et al 2016.…”
