Correlation between Kind of Cesarean Section and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Greek Women

Abstract: A birth experience with cesarean section (CS) can be a cause of the development of post-traumatic stress disorder after a cesarean (PTSD-AC) or profile PTSD, for a percentage of women. So far, there is no data on the frequency of PTSD-AC in Greece and this syndrome is often associated with other mental disorders of the postpartum period. The purpose of this research is to associate the kind of CS with PTSD-AC for Greek mothers and the combination of factors that make them less resistant to trauma. A sample of … Show more

“…Precious pregnancies of women with IVF conception, a high risk of placenta accreta ( 39 ) and, in some cases, the maternal age ( 40 ) constitute factors for ELCS. In our study, women with anxiety disorder or depression were more likely to have an EMCS, a comparable finding of similar studies ( 41 , 42 ) revealing a deficit in perinatal mental health services in Greece ( 43 , 44 ) as opposite to other European countries with low CS rates ( 45 , 46 ).…”

“…Many researchers also have identified the kind of delivery, and in particular cesarean delivery, as a major risk factor for the development of P-PTSD [15][16][17], with a great correlation of PTSD to emergency cesarean section (EMCS) and elective cesarean section (ELCS) [18,19]. Other main risk factors for P-PTSD area history of previous mental disorder [19,20], preterm labor [19][20][21][22], inclusion of neonate in neonatal intensive care unit [23,24], lack of breastfeeding [19,25,26] and a lack of support from spouse during the perinatal period [14,19,23].The factors that can lead to P-PTSD are common in postpartum women of all countries. Given that CS is associated with P-PTSD [27][28][29], in Greek mothers the problem is greater due to the high prevalence of CS.…”

“…This case study is part of a larger survey on postpartum PTSD [ 29 ]. Due to the rarity of the incident, we proceeded after the written consent of the patient for further investigation.…”
