Correlation Between Glutathione Peroxidase Activity and The Quantity of Selenium in The Whole Blood of Beef Calves

Abstract: The aim of the study was to establish concentration of selenium and the pertinent activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px ) in whole blood that could be used as reference values in future research. The first part of study was carried out on clinical healthy beef calves (n = 35), fed a basal diet and a ready-made fodder mix that contained 0.1 mg . kg -1 selenium. In the second part of our research, we investigated the GSH-Px activity in a group of calves (n = 47) that had not received supplements added to th… Show more

“…A high correlation (r ¼ 0:88) between serum selenium concentration and blood GSH-Px activity was obtained for camels reared under three different nutritional systems (Corbera et al, 2001). However, highly significant correlation (r ¼ 0:8120:96) between the activities of GSH-Px in either whole blood or erythrocytes and Se concentration had been demonstrated by many workers in sheep and cattle (Whanger et al, 1977;Anderson, 1978;Abdel Rahim, 1980;Harapin et al, 2000).…”

“…Several authors have described a very high and linear correlation between Se concentration and GPx activities of blood and/or various tissues (Zachara et al, 1993;Harapin et al, 2000;Pavlata et al, 2001). The present results confirm the positive correlation between blood Se content and the activity of this selenoenzyme in blood.…”

“…The Se status is most frequently assessed either directly from Se concentration levels, or indirectly from GSH-Px activity assessment (Harapin et al 2000;Pavlata et al 2000;2001b;2002a).…”
