Correlation between facade sound insulation and urban noise: A contribution to the acoustic classification of existing buildings

Abstract: The aim of this work is the definition of a methodology to analyze the number of buildings exposed to every noise level band, to estimate the required facade sound insulation for indoor comfort, and to evaluate the acoustic classes that would characterize existing building facades adopting the proposal for a new International Organization for Standardization standard. In particular, a relationship based on a statistical approach is analyzed between outdoor noise, determined according to the European Noise Dire… Show more

“…External noise sources, façade insulation, and reverberation time provided the most negative contribution to GNS. A recent study considering more than one hundred façades of Italian schools of all levels (from nursery to upper secondary school) and built in different time periods and building technologies, revealed that almost all the schools needed sound insulation refurbishment and acoustic treatment of classrooms [ 62 ]. Thus, the schools selected within the project across the country can be considered as representative of the general conditions in Italian schools.…”

“…The current framework can face this issue by exploiting the flexibility and the reliability of the low cost devices integrated in a Wireless Sensor Network. Finally, the interaction between the environmental parameters, such as CO 2 concentration and illuminance level, and the users’ thermal sensation will be investigated by exploiting the potential provided by ML techniques, thus allowing to include other aspects related to IEQ: Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), Indoor Lighting Quality (ILQ) [ 66 , 67 , 68 ], Acoustic comfort [ 69 , 70 , 71 ] and their interaction with the energy performance of buildings [ 72 , 73 , 74 , 75 ].…”

“…Some researches face the problem from a technological point of view, developing methods and tools aimed at managing and controlling the environmental variables in order to guarantee the best indoor conditions and energy savings [10,11]. Other researches aim at defining a classification of buildings from the point of view of indoor comfort [12].…”
