Correlation between esterase electrophoretic types and capsular polysaccharide types 5 and 8 among methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus

Abstract: The relationship between capsular polysaccharide types 5 and 8 and esterase electrophoretic types (zymotypes) in 160 French clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus was studied. Methicillin-susceptible strains of capsular types 5 and 8 were represented by Il zymotypes, indicating a high polymorphism. Methicillinresistant strains were mainly distributed in only two distinct populations. The predominant population was represented by strains of zymotype 6 and capsular type 5, and the second population was repre… Show more

“…Additional discrimination may be achieved by REA of plasmid DNA (18). Multilocus enzyme electrophoresis has shown limited discriminatory ability for MRSA from French hospitals (4). Electrophoretic profiling of staphylococcal proteins resolved by direct staining or immunoblotting has displayed variable discriminatory capacity (8,18).…”

“…Electrophoretic analysis of cellular extracts, followed by staining for esterase activity, is a powerful tool for intraspecies delineation of bacteria (18,28) and has been used for the study of methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant strains of S. aureus (9,10). This method can also provide extensive data for epidemiological investigations (11,20).…”

“…According to Branger et al, MRSA strains isolated in France were classified into two basic zymotypes while strains isolated in the USA were more diversified. 7 Diversified clones of MRSA were observed in Germany, as well. 8 The production of beta lactamases is responsible for high proportion of strains resistant to penicillin which were not classified as MRSA.…”
