Correlation between COVID-19 case fatality rate and percentage of BCG vaccination: is it true the vaccine is protective?

Abstract: Background The observations of some recent epidemiological studies offer hope for a reduced impact of COVID-19 for countries which practice universal BCG vaccination policy. Main body This report provides a correlation between the case fatality rates of COVID-19 and the percentage of BCG vaccination coverage in 183 most affected countries. The main objective of this observational ecologic report is to evaluate possible effects of the… Show more

“…A study by Hussein et al supports the fact that the BCG vaccination may have a protective role in avoiding severe/critical SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia and thereby decrease fatalities. Moreover, the partial lockdown imposed in Egypt may have aided in inducing an immune response among the population against COVID-19, decreasing the severity of the symptoms during the beginning of the second wave, before the appearance of new virus mutations and/or the waning of immunity 18 .…”

“…It has been hypothesized that BCGvaccination could associate with decreased disease severity and lethality during COVID-19 worldwide (158). The lethality reported by COVID-19 in countries with BCG vaccination is about 5.8 times lower than countries without the BCG vaccination program (159). Equivalent suggestions have been made by other studies supporting the notion of using the BCG vaccine to prevent severe COVID-19 at least in the most vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and healthcare personnel (160,161).…”

“…The protective effect of the BCG vaccine against Mtb is not lasting long and decreases with time. Therefore, making a precise estimate for BCG efficacy is very difficult and needs extensive validation before reaching a concrete conclusion [ 99 , 100 , 101 ].…”
