In this work, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analysis is optimized for direct estimation of elemental composition, thermal conductivity and hardness for Ni-Cr-Nb alloys. These alloys were chosen with a variable elemental content of niobium and chromium. The influence of laser energy and shot numbers on measuring line intensity was investigated. Based on the ratio between two spectral lines, calibration curves were formed to estimate the element concentration and LIBS results were confirmed with related energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) data. Hardness and thermal conductivity estimation using LIBS were done by measuring the ratio between two spectral lines, plasma excitation temperature and electron density for different samples. Semi-empirical formulas correlated hardness and thermal conductivity with plasma temperature were established.

ARTICLE INFO ABSTRACTArticle history:The hardness of surface treated magnesium alloy was evaluated using laser induced breakdown spectroscopy. The surface of the specimen was hardened mechanically, and the hardness profiles were measured using a traditional measurement technique. A laser beam was irradiated to generate a plasma, and the peaks of the components of the specimen were analyzed. A wavelength of 333.66 nm and 293.65 nm were selected as the atomic and ionic peaks, respectively. The ratios of the ionic peak to the atomic peak were obtained so as to compare the hardness profile. As the depth increased, the ratio decreased. These results are in good agreement with the previous hardness measurement results. It can be considered that this technique could be applied for remote and time-efficient hardness measurement.

In this study, we evaluated the feasibility of using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to determine the stress generated in metal materials by comparing measured stress levels with those determined by x-ray diffraction (XRD). Magnesium (Mg) alloy specimens underwent impact stress generated under ultrasonic peening. Stainless steel specimens were subjected to bending stress. The reference stress for each specimen was measured using XRD. LIBS measurements were performed to determine the correlation between stress distribution and the ratio of ionic to atomic spectral line intensity. The stress distribution from the surface to the interior of the ultrasonic-peened specimens measured by LIBS showed a similar tendency to that measured by XRD, but there was a difference in the maximum measurable depth. Additionally, the tensile and compressive stress distributions measured by LIBS on bending specimens showed similar trends to those of XRD. From these results, it was possible to measure the correlation between the stress state of the metal matrix and the spectral line strength of LIBS, thus confirming the potential for stress measurement using LIBS.
