Sunflower cultivation has great importance in Brazil, mainly for production of oil and animal feed. Studies on sunflower cultivar selection are important for crop expansion, contributing to better cultivar adaptation to different environments. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the linear relations among sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) morphological traits in a subtropical region with lower elevations and to identify traits that may assist in cultivar selection based on agronomic performance and path analysis. The experiment was performed during the 2017/2018 agricultural year in Santa Maria (latitude 29º71′ S, longitude 53º70′ W and 90 m altitude), southern Brazil. The experimental design was a randomized block with four replicates and eight cultivars: Syn 045, BRS 323, BRS G58, BRS G59, BRS G60, BRS G61, Multissol 02 and Catissol 03. Assessed traits were plant height, stem diameter, head diameter, thousand achenes weight, yield of achenes per head and number of achenes per head. Hereafter, associations between morphological traits and achene yield were verified by means of linear relations and path analysis. Thousand achenes weight and number of achenes per head exhibited linear relations and direct effects on achene yield in subtropical region at lower elevations. Head diameter does not present direct effect on achenes yield but it has direct effect on the number of achenes per head, indicating cause-effect relation and becoming an important alternative for indirect selection of sunflower cultivars.

The study, conducted at the research area of Raja Wala farm, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan, assessed the sunflowers’ (Helianthus annuus L.) early maturity and yield improvement. Experimental material came from the United States Department of Agriculture and the National Agricultural Research Centre. Cytoplasmic male sterile lines and restorers, grown in the field, had their data gathered regarding early maturity. Then, the crossing of selected lines employed the line × tester design. The following season, the resulting crosses and their parents’ evaluation proceeded in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) using three replications. The crosses declared as best hybrids in terms of early maturity and yield were 7-A × 86-R, 11-A × 83-R, 23-A × 81-R, 25-A × 80- R, 25-A × 94-R, and 27-A × 80-R. These best hybrids further underwent oil content and quality analysis. The crosses 23-A × 81-R and 25-A × 80-R revealed good performance for oil contents (palmitic, stearic, linoleic, and oleic acids) and quality traits like early maturing with better yield. Using RAPD markers, the authenticity assessment of the best hybrids through the presence and absence of bands compared with parents ensued. These hybrids will be helpful in future breeding programs for the development of early maturing varieties with improved achene yield and quality, which is rare in Pakistan. This material will also help develop the required hybrids.

This study was carried out to estimate the genetic parameters, heritability in broad sense, Phenotypic coefficient (PCV), Genotypic coefficient (GCV) and phenotypic and genotypic correlation among characteristics of sunflower genotypes. Eight sunflower genotypes were evaluated in the randomized complete block design (RBCD) with three replications under three nitrogen rates (50, 100 and 200) Nkha-1 at spring and fall season. The results indicated that the sunflower genotypes were significantly for all characteristics. The phenotypic coefficient (PCV) was largest than the genotypic coefficient (GCV). The seed yield showed the highest PCV under 200 Nkha-1 (15.73) and the highest GCV (12.48) under 50 Nkha-1. Higher value of heritability in the broad sense was obtained (92.66, 94.13) % for seed weight and seed yield under (200) Nkha-1. while the lowest value of heritability was scored (44.56)% for seed yield in the fall season under 200 Nkha-1. However, characteristics having high stability, like disc diameter and seed weight under all nitrogen fertilizer rates, therefore can be used a selection criteria to improve some sunflower genotypes under nitrogen fertilizers.
