Correlation analysis of muscle spindle responses to single motor unit contractions.

Abstract: SUMMARY1. Cross-correlation techniques have been used to study the responses of muscle spindle afferents from the soleus muscle of the cat to twitch contractions of single motor units.2. Cross-correlograms (post-stimulus time histograms) were used to give the frequency of occurrence of a receptor spike at various times following the initiation of a motor unit contraction together with a display of the average twitch tension wave form.3. The cross-correlograms revealed that the contraction of a single motor uni… Show more

“…The discharge of both individual Golgi tendon organs (Houk & Henneman, 1967) and muscle spindles (Binder, Kroin, Moore, Stauffer & Stuart, 1976) can be affected by the activity of a very small number of motor units in adult cats. In addition, an intramuscular localization of reflex pathways has been demonstrated recently (Botterman, Hamm, Reinking & Stuart, 1981 Reduced neuromuscular activity The more drastic procedure of combined cord transaction and bilateral deafferentation led to a more marked alteration of development.…”

“…During a voluntary contraction spindle endings are subjected not only to fusimotor influences but also to the modulating effect of asynchronous twitch contractions of anatomically related muscle units (Binder, Kroin, Moore, Stauffer & Stuart, 1976;Windhorst & Meyer-Lohmann, 1977;Binder & Stuart, 1978). From the present results, it seems likely that asynchronous twitching of adjacent muscle fibres can affect the variability of spindle discharge significantly.…”

“…Our computational techniques have been detailed in another report (Binder et al 1976). For each spike train, the time of every pulse event is determined (to nearest 0.1 msec) and entered into a computer file.…”

“…Cross-correlation histograms are then compiled between the afferent and efferent channels. Eighteen motor unit twitches were selected at random throughout each run and averaged for display (Stein, French, Mannard & Yemm, 1972;Binder, Rosenberg, McWilliams & Moore, 1974;Binder et al 1976). The correlograms (cross-correlation histograms) show the 338 Ib RESPONSES TO MOTOR UNIT CONTRACTIONS 339 frequency of occurrence of a sensory spike as a function of time following the e.m.g.…”
