Correlations between material parameters are useful because they provide a first estimation of unknown parameters. Here, the correlation between the tensile strength and the mode I fracture toughness of rocks is studied. Some researchers have proposed empirical correlations based on a certain amount of empirical data and a fitting process. On the other hand, a few researchers have considered that the proportionality coefficient could be related to a rock property with units of length. Here, a linear relationship without an intercept at the origin between the tensile strength and the mode I fracture toughness of rocks is theoretically confirmed using the theory of critical distances (TCD). A comprehensive experimental database is presented and comparisons with this data from the literature (including tests at different temperatures) confirm the linear relationship and values of the critical distance of several millimeters (e.g., 3–15 mm). However, the scatter is large because there are different sources of uncertainty in the correlation, such as the testing method. Finally, the physical meaning of the critical distance is explored and its linear correlation with the grain size using the experimental database.

In China, coal seam water injection technology is widely used in the prevention and control of mine gas and dust disasters. The evolution law of stress–seepage field in the range of hydraulic influence in the process of coal seam water injection is the most basic theoretical problem in coal seam water injection technology. Therefore, this paper first uses the radial seepage experimental system to test the permeability of raw coal samples, and then numerically inverts the stress–seepage evolution law of the coal body around the water injection hole. The results show that the coal seam permeability decreases exponentially with the increase in the experimental overburden pressure. The dynamic water intrusion causes the pressure relief area and the stress concentration area to transfer to the deep part of the coal body, and abnormal stress occurs near the water injection hole wall. The composite stress area formed by the superposition of stress and pore water pressure reduces the permeability of the hole wall. During the radial development of water injection, the pore water pressure dropped sharply and eventually tended to zero, while Darcy’s velocity decreased significantly (within the pressure relief zone, it rapidly decreased from 7.26 × 10−3 m s−1 to 2.5 × 10−3 m s−1 (by 65.56%)). Near the initiation point, the maximum step-down height of Darcy’s velocity decreased from 6.73 × 10−3 m s−1 to 5.27 × 10−3 m s−1 (by 22.73%). This can make it clear that the seepage velocity presents a non-Darcy seepage phenomenon under the influence of pore pressure.

Moravian greywacke – evaluation of fracture, strength and deformability properties

This contribution brings overview of mechanical properties of greywacke with focus on fracture mechanics parameters. Investigated rock type is clastic sediment, relatively widespread in Moravia region. The rock type is significantly utilized in construction industry. For purposes of this study, Kobeřice quarry was selected as sampling locality. Mechanical properties were investigated by deformation controlled 3-point bending test. Chevron notch was created on specimens in order to study fracture mechanics parameters. Moreover, deformation controlled uniaxial compression tests were carried out, as well. Specimens were equipped with strain gauges; thus, elastic modulus and the Poisson’s ratio could be determined. Splitting tensile test was employed in order to determine tensile strength. Mean value of fracture toughness KIC was determined to 1.85 MPa·m0.5. Mean value of uniaxial compressive strength was observed at level of 211 MPa and tensile strength reached 19.4 MPa. Hence, the tested greywacke was considered as high strength rock. Brittle type of failure occurred during the tests. The obtained results were compared with values reported for clastic sediments from several localities in the Czech Republic. Moravian greywacke reached significantly high strength in comparison to other clastic sedimentary rocks and can be considered as valuable raw material for purposes of construction industry.
