Correlating the end-Triassic mass extinction and flood basalt volcanism at the 100 ka level

Abstract: New high-precision U/Pb geochronology from volcanic ashes shows that the Triassic-Jurassic boundary and end-Triassic biological crisis from two independent marine stratigraphic sections correlate with the onset of terrestrial flood volcanism in the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province to <150 ka. This narrows the correlation between volcanism and mass extinction by an order of magnitude for any such catastrophe in Earth history. We also show that a concomitant drop and rise in sea level and negative delta(13)C s… Show more

“…Under this revised scheme, the Rhaetian and the Triassic-Jurassic boundary therefore concentrate a massive faunal turnover for marine reptiles. Severe environmental changes have also been reported in the same interval, notably a meteorite impact (Olsen et al 2002;Smit et al 2014) and flood volcanism (Schoene et al 2010;Whiteside et al 2010). However, precise stratigraphic correlation in between all these biotic events and between the biotic and abiotic events is still wanting (see reviews of Hesselbo et al 2002;Deenen et al 2010;Van de Schootbrugge et al 2013).…”

“…MARZOLI et al (1999) kormeghatározásai mutattak rá a Közép-Atlanti mag más provincia (KAMP) hatalmas kiterjedésére, ami a tengeri rétegsorokban definiált triász-jura határ korával jó egyezést mutatott (PÁLFY et al 2000). A mind pontosabbá váló U-Pb kormeghatározások megerősítették a tengeri kiha lás (SCHOENE et al 2010) és a vulkanizmus (BLACKBURN et al 2013) időbeli egyezését. A vulkáni kigázosodás mérté -két újszerű geokémiai vizsgálatok is alátámasztják (CALLEGARO et al 2014), valamint a légköri szén-dioxid szintjének megugrását is mind megbízhatóbban ismerjük (STEINTHORSDOTTIR et al 2011).…”
