Correlating Gastrointestinal Histopathologic Changes to Clinical Disease Activity in Dogs With Idiopathic Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Abstract: Prior studies have failed to detect a convincing association between histologic lesions of inflammation and clinical activity in dogs with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We hypothesized that use of a simplified histopathologic scoring system would improve the consistency of interpretation among pathologists when describing histologic lesions of gastrointestinal inflammation. Our aim was to evaluate the correlation of histopathologic changes to clinical activity in dogs with IBD using this new system. Forty-… Show more

“…The fact that this was not true for the ileum might be because of the small number of dogs in which ileal biopsies were performed. Also, standardized scoring of both endoscopy and histology findings specifically for the ileum is not included in the WSAVA guidelines, even though the scoring system used for duodenal biopsies has been previously validated for ileal lesions . This study highlights the need for a more comprehensive histological assessment of the ileum …”

“…Despite its indisputable diagnostic value, the histopathological examination of biopsy specimens has some limitations. Histopathological lesions of the gastrointestinal mucosa are poorly correlated with an assessment of the clinical response to the applied therapy, and their application in diagnosis is limited [ 20 , 24 26 ]. Similar to clinical indices, this examination does not distinguish food-responsive enteropathies, bacterial hypertrophy, or parasitic enteropathy from IBD [ 3 , 4 , 27 ].…”
