Correlates to Sleepiness on Night Shift among Male Workers Engaged in Three-shift Work in a Chemical Plant: Its Association with Sleep Practice and Job Stress

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation of sleepiness during night shift (SNS) in male shiftworkers with nonpharmacological self-management (nPSM) practices to facilitate good day sleep, and also with job stress. Sleepiness on the job and possible correlates to SNS among 157 male shiftworkers in a rotating three-shift schedule at a chemical plant were cross-sectionally investigated using a self-administered questionnaire. “…Another study suggested that rotating shifts among paramedics cause higher levels of sleepiness and fatigue (24), while our study indicated that rotating shifts cause fatigue (physical impact) and insomnia (psychological impact). The finding of a study shows that the shift workers were associated with a higher prevalence of insomnia (25) and sleepiness during the night shift (26). In this study, the rotating shift nurses reported insomnia and cognitive difficulty as psychological impacts.…”

“…Similar findings have been reported by various authors (Nielsen, ; Yu, Yun, & Ahn, ). Therefore, increasing social support (Kageyama, Kobayashi, & Abe‐Gotoh, ) and established good lifestyles (i.e., balanced diet and physical activity) should be encouraged, thereby preventing the development of sleep and mood problems.…”
