Correlates of sex-specific young adult college student dating violence typologies: A latent class analysis approach.

Abstract: Objective: To use latent class analysis (LCA) techniques to identify the sex-specific structure of college student dating violence typologies and to examine the shared and sex-specific background-situational correlates of college student dating violence typologies. Method: Sample consisted of 3,344 North American college students (2,323 females and 1,021 males) between 18 and 25 years in heterosexual dating relationships. Data were drawn from the International Dating Violence Study. Results: Five college stude… Show more

“…51 Similarly, latent class analysis has been used to develop offender profiles of burglars, 52 sexual burglary, 53 participants in drug treatment court, 54 and dating violence. 55 More recently, Clemmow, Bouhana & Gill 56 developed a typology of person-exposure patterns (PEPs) in cases of lone-actor terrorism.…”

“…For example, this analytical strategy developed pathway typologies of a range of offenders, including nonserial sexual killers (Stefanska et al, 2015), sex offenders who target marginalized victims (Horan & Beauregard, 2017), extrafamilial sexual aggressors against women (Proulx et al, 2014a), intrafamilial child sex offenders (Leclerc et al, 2014), extrafamilial sexual aggressors against adolescents (Brouillette-Alarie & Proulx, 2014), and marital rapists (Proulx et al, 2014b). Similarly, latent class analyses developed offender profiles of burglars (Fox & Farrington, 2012); sexual burglary (Pedneault et al, 2012); participants in drug treatment court (Larsen et al, 2014); dating violence (Krishnakumar et al, 2018), and may more. More recently, Clemmow et al, (2019) developed a typology of person-exposure patterns (PEPs) in 125 cases of lone-actor terrorism.…”

“…Supporting the cumulative risk hypothesis (Rutter, 1979) and the polyvictimization model (Finkelhor, Ormrod, & Turner, 2007a, 2007b; Turner, Finkelhor, & Ormrod, 2010), these studies suggest that the subgroups with multiple types of maltreatment endorse higher rates of psychopathology in contrast to victimization profiles exposed to fewer victimization types. Studies also suggest that there are subgroup differences in the causes, manifestation, and consequences of ADV (Brooks-Russell, Foshee, & Ennett, 2013; Krishnakumar, Conroy, & Narine, 2018). However, it is only recently that a small body of research (Brooks-Russell et al, 2013; Choi, Weston, & Temple, 2017; Haynie et al, 2013; Reidy et al, 2016) has begun to examine distinct ADV profiles.…”

“…Person-centered analytic perspectives on partner violence suggest that there may be heterogeneous patterns of ADV victimization during adolescence that have different causes and consequences. The person-centered analytic approaches have identified two to six classes of ADV depending on gender composition (male/female/both genders), type of ADV (one or multiple types), and the context of ADV (victimization, perpetration, or a combination) examined (Ansara, 2009;Brooks-Russell et al, 2013;Krishnakumar et al, 2018;Reyes, Foshee, Chen, & Ennett, 2017). Identified subgroups combined with information on associated precursors and hypothesized outcomes have indeed strengthened the ADV research field.…”
