Correlates of Physical Activity in Adults With Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Positive associations with PA were found for motivation, self-efficacy, health perception, and previous PA levels. Negative associations were found for fatigue, a coerced regulation style and certain physiological variables. In addition differences between correlates of PA in the adult RA population and other chronic disease and healthy adult populations have been demonstrated.

“…Considering the inconsistency of previous research (13,(41)(42)(43), our research question regarding sex and physical activity over 2 years was more explorative. One reason for the disparate findings in previous studies may be the different study designs and methods of measurement.…”

“…To explain and possibly influence physical activity behavior, numerous correlates in different domains have been identified in the general population (12) and in RA (13). For RA, psychosocial variables are stronger correlates of physical activity behavior than disease-related and sociodemographic ones (9,13,14).…”

“…However, changing behaviour is a complex issue, and in order to change behaviour, consideration must be given to the factors which influence the behaviour [21]. Factors which influence physical activity in people who have RA include beliefs about RA and motivation [22]. Such factors are amendable to change, and how these factors are addressed is an important element of behaviour change interventions [23].…”

“…Despite the beneficial effects of HEPA, many persons with RA do not reach or maintain the recommended HEPA levels . To explore and potentially influence physical activity behavior, numerous correlates have been identified in the general population and in RA . For people with RA, psychological and contextual variables seem to be stronger correlates of physical activity than disease‐related and sociodemographic ones .…”
